Condoms

Condoms

Condoms protect against HIV and reduce the risk of infection with sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhoea, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. (If you have sex with frequently changing partners, you should be vaccinated against hepatitis A and B.)

Condoms are available from chemists, supermarkets, pharmacies and sex shops, and also from vending machines. You can also obtain condoms and lubricants at places for men looking for sex with men (saunas, dark room bars, adult movie theatres).

Standard-size condoms will fit most men, but there are also larger and smaller condoms. For smaller penises, there are also models with a special ring in the middle that prevents the condom from slipping off.

Important: Condoms are an effective means of protection only if they are used correctly. And as for size and usage, just keep trying until it works!

And even if the condom slips off or breaks, the risk of HIV infection can still be reduced considerably.

Instructions on how to use condoms

When using condoms, it is important to pay attention to the following points:

  • Only use proven-quality condoms (you can identify the quality, for example, by the CE logo or the DIN number) and note the best-before date.
  • Do not use sharp objects (knife, scissors) or your teeth to tear open the package. Watch out for sharp fingernails!
  • The penis should be erect before you put on the condom. Pull the foreskin back and place the condom over the glans. The rolled rim should be on the outside. Gently press the tip of the condom to remove air. Then, use the other hand to roll the condom all the way down.
  • Never use two condoms at the same time - this can cause friction and they might break or slip off more easily.
  • Always use sufficient fat-free lubricant when having anal sex or if the vagina is dry. Never use fatty agents (Vaseline, massage oil, body lotion) because these will destroy the condom!
  • First put the condom on the penis, then apply the lubricant.
Never put lubricant on the penis before putting on the condom, as this may cause it to slip off more easily.
  • Check with your hand now and then to see whether the condom is still on properly.
  • After ejaculation, remove the penis from the vagina or anus while it is still hard. Hold onto the rubber ring of the condom while removing the penis.
