Femidoms

Femidoms

Femidoms are female condoms. They are a female-controlled safe-sex method that protects women from HIV and, if used properly, reduces the risk of becoming infected with other sexually transmitted diseases (STD).

The size ranges of female condoms are 170 mm and 180 mm in length. The femidom is a thin, tear-resistant sheath made of plastic with one end open and the other closed. It can be used both during vaginal and anal intercourse. Femidoms are available at well-stocked drugstores, pharmacies and sex shops, as well as online. The price range is between € 2 and € 3 per femidom.

How to use a femidom

  • Only use proven-quality femidoms (you can identify the quality, for example, by the CE logo) and note the best-before date.
  • Be careful when opening the package– do not use sharp objects (knife, scissors) or your teeth to tear open the package. Watch out for sharp fingernails!
  • Apply lubricant to both sides of the femidom. This will help prevent the penis from causing friction and will make the female condom fit snugly against the vaginal walls..
  • Each end of the femidom has a ring. Use your thumb and middle finger to squeeze together the inner ring (the one at the closed end of the tube) and then then push the femidom into your vagina until it reaches the uterine orifice or cervix. The front ring remains outside the vaginain front of the outer labia.
  • For anal intercourse, remove the inner ringand then use your finger to introduce the femidom into the anus. The front ring remains outside.
  • After sex twist the femidom once or twice and remove it carefully by gently pulling it out of the vagina, so that no semen is spilt.
  • Just like with condoms, do not re-use femidoms.
