Testing and diagnosis

CHECKPOINT OFFERS THE FOLLOWING TESTS:

HIV testing, testing for STI such as syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhoea (the clap). In addition, we provide hepatitis B testing and identify appropriate vaccination. We also offer hepatitis A and C testing.

The offer is anonymous and confidential. It includes short pre-test counselling session on sexual health which may include an assessment of your infection risks and address any issues in connection with the modes of transmission and ways of protecting yourself.

RAPID HIV TEST

Rapid HIV testing will deliver the result within 20 minutes. However, this test can be done only if at least 12 weeks have passed since the most recent situation in which you are likely to have caught HIV.

HIV testing should be done whenever you suspect that you may have contracted the virus. This is usually the case if you had sex without a condom (anal or vaginal intercourse) with a partner who might be HIV-positive. You also have a high risk of infection if you share needles.

The test will not detect the virus itself but it will detect any antibodies which the body needs up to 90 days to form. Therefore, if you want to make sure that there is no infection, you should get tested three months after the risk exposure. If you test earlier, testing cannot reliably exclude a possible infection. We recommend that, before actually getting tested, you ring us to assess the potential transmission situation more in detail. Any such consultation will be on an anonymous and confidential basis.

HIV LABORATORY TESTING

Another option is to have an HIV laboratory test. This test will provide reliable results already 6 weeks after the most recent risk exposure. However, you will have to personally pick up the testing result a week after the blood sampling.

BEING TESTED AND TREATED FOR OTHER SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS

STI tests are based on blood, urine or swab samples which are sent to a laboratory. After a week, you can call Checkpoint for the results.

A blood sample may show syphilis pathogens, hepatitis or the vaccination status. Testing based on urine or swabs (oral, vaginal, anal or urethral) may show chlamydia and gonorrhoea. If a urine sample is collected, please remember to not urinate for 1 to 2 hours before the test.
Should a sexually transmitted infection be confirmed, you may seek treatment at Checkpoint.
